Atlantic Stockyards Observations

Here are 3 observations from Sean Firth, owner of Atlantic Stockyards following the October sale which featured Canadian Angus Association Green Tagged Calves.
1. Approximately 15% of the calves sold are Angus or Angus influenced.
2. The Angus calves when grouped properly will sell at or slightly below (5 cents) the Char calves, but 12-15 cents over the average of all calves at similar weights.
3. Vaccinated cattle regardless of breed were sold at a $47 per head premium over non vaccinated calves, this is a consistent trend.

Weight Submission Deadline Extended

Dear Canadian Angus Performance Program Member;

Earlier this summer we advised all members who participate in the performance program and submit their calf performance data that the deadline for inclusion into the next NCE had changed from November 1st to October 10th.

We appreciate the patience of our CAPP members during this time, and we value your participation on the Performance Program.

We have heard your concerns about the deadline and have extended it to October 15th.

If you still cannot meet this deadline:

·         There is no penalty!
·         We still want your weights, send them when you can.
·         There is another evaluation in June 2011 and your calves will receive National EPDs then.
·         In the meantime the CAA will generate interim EPDs, which include both parental information and weaning weight information in the calculation

We hope that this extension to the deadline will alleviate a little stress during this busy harvest and give you more time to get your calves weighed.

We understand that some members might not be able to make the deadline even with the extension. Please submit your weights as soon as possible even if it is after the deadline.

If you are able to have your calves’ weaning weights into the office before October 15th the association staff will work hard to make sure that the weights are included in the upcoming Evaluation.

Please contact me if you have any questions at all.
Regards, Kajal.

Spring 2011 NCE Data Submission Deadline has been changed to October 10th 2010. Please make sure that all performance data to be included in the genetic evaluation is in the office by October 10th, 2010. Weights that are submitted after this date will be used to generate Interim EPDs instead. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Success Stories from past Angus in Action Sale Entries

Glen and Ronnie Ford of Wheatley River Farm sold Wheatley River Rosie, a bred yearling, in 2006 at the Angus in Action Sale to Beth Trueman. This was the first Angus female purchase for the Trueman’s.  Beth has shown Rosie at the Maritime Fall Fair and this past year she was shown at the Sainte-Marie-de-Kent Fair in August. She was the 1st place senior female and Reserve Grand Female.  The Fords have a heifer calf, from this same cow family, in this year’s Angus in Action Sale.  She has been in their show string this past summer and placed very well in the competitive Angus class.
